Get to know more about me
Before we get attached to the term monk… No I don’t live in a monastery or as a renunciate. For me the monk is simply a symbol of simplicity, honesty, discipline, kindness and that’s how I choose to do things.
Why I Do What I Do
Ever since I was a kid, something inside of me has allowed me to see the greatness in people. I found however, the most important thing is for each person to see their own inner greatness.
I’ve heard too many people say ‘I can’t’ – too often, and I know it doesn’t have to be this way.
I’ve learned to do plenty of things people said ‘I couldn’t do.’ Things like…
- How to be strong and flexible at the same time (after being as inflexible as a brick),
- How to create a virtually injury proof body, with the confidence to move as I choose,
- How to confidently perform challenging skills like handstands,
- How after feeling drained and worn down, to have all the energy I need to live adventurously,
- And – most challenging of all – what it takes to keep a calm mind, to make clear decisions from my heart, and to better share my gifts with the world.
In my experience, all we often need is someone to show us a way to say ‘I CAN,’ instead of the opposite. Once you experience this enough, something amazing happens…
You begin to see your own true greatness.
I do what I do to show others how great they can be – mentally, physically and some say spiritually… and help them actually believe it.
The Movement Monk Mission
To create a culture where people don’t know the meaning of ‘I can’t,’ where they’re empowered physically and mentally to live richer, happier, more flowing lives.
Breaking my back and coming back
I began my path of physical development playing elite sport for Australia. Back then my training was all about stats and performance on the volleyball court. I wanted to be faster, better, stronger.
I used to like to lift heavy things up and down. I’ll admit at the time it felt good, and it delivered the outcome I had intended.
Upon reflection, it was an outlet to express a deep anger I wasn’t really present with. There were some deep wounds I was hiding and looking to heal through becoming physically powerful.
Wow, that got deep quickly…
As they’d say in eastern philosophy – I was very yang, meaning I was out of balance. I was focused solely on my body, but neglected the way it was innately connected to the mind.
My previously single layered approach, built a prison of tension in my body, and as a result I suffered a debilitating spinal injury.
I sought the help of physiotherapists, chiropractors, myo-therapists and more, but I only seemed to make short term improvements. Each session I would experience relief, but sooner or later the pain would come creeping back, so I’d book another appointment.
And so the vicious cycle continued… I had a gut feeling that something was missing to return me to strength.
Upon deep reflection I realised, if i’m going to develop harmony in my body and mind I need to take responsibility for my self.
I realised ‘my body is my own. The best person to take care of it is me, and in order to take care of my body I must understand it – inside and out.’ This is something I focus my teachings around – it’s like teaching others to hunt, instead of just feeding them.
I embarked on a journey to research and practice a range of mental and physical disciplines; including the Alexander Technique, Martial Arts, Neuro-Linguistic Patterning (NLP), Meditation, Gymnastics, Shaolin Monk practise and more.
I pieced the information together, developed new skills and worked with the knowledge in an integrated and intuitive manner. In doing so, I discovered an approach that healed my spine and allowed me to become more resilient than ever.
I’ve been refining this approach over 11 years whilst working in the field of health, wellness and human movement and have shared it with thousands of others who have also had mind and body outcomes beyond what they could have imagined.
I have worked in the areas of:
- High level physical rehabilitation (the cases most were scared to work with)
- Lifestyle coaching
- Teacher training for health professionals
- Gym and health studio consultation
- Sports performance (for martial artists, track and field, and many teams)
- The arts, circus performers and dancers
- Business and entrepreneur wellness programs
- And more.
Over the past eleven years I’ve worked to inspire health professionals, yogi’s martial artists, Cross-fitters, dancers, and everyday people to hit the refresh button on their bodies and minds, so they can live more purposeful lives — but i’m just getting warmed up.
